The competition is open to all visual artists,18 years or older, working in the media photography, painting and sculpture (no installations) The categories are: Landscape - Citylife - Interior - Still Life - Portrait /People - Nature/Animals - Abstract The exhibition time : 29th of August 2008 - 11th of September 2008. The winners of each 7 categories and the best sculptor will be presented at the Gallery with 5 - 8 artworks and on the gallery website for minimum one year. Entry fee : 45 USD for up to 5 images, 7 USD for each additional image.

The competition and resulting exhibition will celebrate excellence and innovation, with a strong focus on the variety of portrait media used by artists today. The juried competition will result in an exhibition of approximately 60 of the finalists’ works. The National Portrait Gallery welcomes single figure-, group-, or self-portraits—from classical drawing and painting or hyperrealistic sculpture to large-scale photography to prints and new media. The competition is named for Virginia Outwin Boochever (1920–2005), a former Portrait Gallery volunteer whose generous gift has endowed this program.

The show will be judged by Alan Flattmann and $5000 in prize money and merchandise will be awarded. Blue Ridge is located in the beautiful north Georgia mountains. The show will run from October 18th through November 14th, a traditionally heavy traffic time for fall leaf viewers. In addition, for 2008, the US National Adventure Race will be run in Blue Ridge November 7th & 8th, bringing thousands more visitors from across the nation. Art works selected by the juror will be displayed in the Richard Lowe Evans‘ Gallery. The gallery is in the historic courtroom of the Blue Ridge Mountains Arts Association (The Art Center.)

First prize is $2,500. The first-prize winner and runners-up are featured on Aperture’s website for approximately one year. Winners are also announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches thousands of subscribers in the photography community.
